A mug for two
There is hardly another festival with as many other customs as the wedding. Veils and bridal bouquets, wedding waltzes and logs, rice sprinkling and kidnapping – no matter how traditional or modern the bride and groom are, one or the
other wedding custom is always there. The Nuemberg region has a special romantic tradition – that of the bridal cup. The custom of drinking out of the bridal cup as a married couple is rooted in a beautiful legend.
Kunigunde and the goldsmith
Kunigunde, the daughter of a powerful nobleman, once loved a hardworking goldsmith. But their happiness didn´t last long. When she confessed her love to the father, he threw
the chosen one into the dungeon. Kunigunde´s heart was broken and she cried all the time – until she changed the stern father and made him promise to release the goldsmith.
But he made one condition:
If the artisan managed to forge a mug from which the couple could drink at the same time Without spilling a drop, he would end captivity. The gentleman secretly thought that this task was impossible. But the enamored and skillful goldsmith soon presented his work: the cup resembled his beloved Kunigunde, who held a movable cup with his hands raised.
Upside down, her wide skirt also formed a goblet, so that the cup was, as it were, two-shelled. This made it easy for the lovers to drink from the masterpiece at the same time, and Kundigunde was allowed to marry their goldsmith. On the wedding da and often afterwards they drank together from the bowls. And if they have not died yet…
A sip for marital happiness
The bridal mug is still a symbol of love and loyalty. Drinking form such a vessel after the wedding ceremony is said to bring constant happiness to the newlyweds. The following also applies: Whoever drinks his part of the cup first will wear his pants in marriage. The shiny mug made of high quality fine tin is lovingly designed and decorated down to the smallest detail and is therefore a wonderful wedding gift with a long tradition and deep meaning.
