German Gifts - Erzgebirge Wood Crafts - Candle Arches
One of the most well-known Erzgebirge wooden crafts is the candle arch. Similar to the Christmas pyramid, the Erzgebirge candle arch displays scenes of everyday life, the nativity, Christmas traditions, religious scenes, animals, or historical cityscapes. An arch of candles goes over the figurines, but many are lit with electricity or batteries now. The Erzgebirge candle arch makes a gorgeous addition to your home decor or Christmas decorations and has been part of the Erzgebirge collection for more than 250 years. The first candle arch was made by blacksmith Johann Teller in Johanngeorgenstadt in 1726. The form of the arch goes back to the Erzgebirge mining tradition — for their last shift before Christmas, the Ore Mountain miners hung their lamps around the outline of the mine entrance, so the lights formed an arch. And this gave birth to the candle arches you see below.
The candle arch has been part of the Erzgebirge Christmas as a festival of lights for more than 250 years. The first candle arch was made by blacksmith Johann Teller in Johanngeorgenstadt as a wrought-iron work in 1726. The form of the arch goes back to the Erzgebirge mining tradition. For their last shift before Christmas, miners hung their lamps around the outline of the mine entrance, so the lights formed an arch. The cloud motif that can be seen on many of our candle arches and the patented inside illumination are distinct features of products from our workshop.
