Shield clocks
The shield clock originated in the Black Forest of Germany around the mid-1700s like it’s cousin the traditional cuckoo clock. A shield clock’s design has a square wooden face with a semi-circle on the top to mimic a shield. These are made of wood from the Black Forest and hand-painted with various scenes of people, landscapes, fruits and vegetables, flowers or animals. The shield clock’s internal workings are mechanical like that of the cuckoo clock, but the weights are metal rods instead of pinecone-shaped. You’ll find a pendulum and chains hanging from the clock to aid the mechanics. Sometimes even a cuckoo bird or other figurine pops out at every hour like the cuckoo clock. If the traditional cuckoo clock that comes in the A-frame chalet or typical leaf and bird motif styles is not for you, then a shield clock is a perfect way to own a beautiful clock for your home that has the essence of the Black Forest and Germany.
It is made of wood, handmade in the Black Forest, Germany.
